Paul McCartney will not be coming to Las Cruces

LAS CRUCES - "Hello, Goodbye," indeed.
Two weeks ago, all signs pointed to Paul McCartney performing a Memorial Day weekend concert at Aggie Memorial Stadium as part of his 2013 "Out There!" tour. But alas, the Beatles legend will not come here after all.

A proposed May 26 show fell through after the tour was rerouted, according to Scott Breckner, head of NMSU's special events office. Breckner said he was disappointed they couldn't work it out.

"We're disappointed, obviously, but we understand these things do happen when you start finalizing tours of this magnitude," Breckner said.

Originally, McCartney's handlers were looking at bringing the Beatles legend to the stadium, where he performed in 1993, on May 24. But Breckner said that date was pushed back two days to accommodate routing.

A May 22 show at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin was announced Thursday, though Breckner isn't sure how, if at all, the finalizing of that performance impacted the tour's travel plans.

"I'll be curious to see how the routing turns out," Breckner said.

The original proposal was to route McCartney's tour to both NMSU's Pan American Center in Las Cruces and the United Spirit Center in Lubbock, according to Barbara Hubbard, the retired NMSU special events director who was involved in negotiations.

"I'm very disappointed. I thought for sure we were gonna work this out," she said, adding that she hasn't "given up yet."

Hubbard thinks McCartney could gross $1 million if played the Pan Am, and she plans to make another offer to his handlers soon.

"I have to think of what I want to say to him," she said.

Las Cruces resident Christi Getz said she saw McCartney perform at Reunion Arena in Dallas in 2006, and "it was the best show you'll ever see."

She said she was excited when she heard the news he might be coming to NMSU and every day was eager to find out when tickets would go on sale. When told he would not be coming, Getz said she was really bummed.

"I'm thankful I have seen him once before. That's my only saving grace right now," she said. "I'm very, very disappointed, but I'm sure he has his reasons."

So far, McCartney's tour has announced a handful of shows in Brazil in May and Europe in June, an appearance at Tennesee's Bonnaroo festival in June and a stop at Boston's Fenway Park on July 9.

According to press reports, "Out There" may also travel to the Washington Nationals' stadium on July 12 and Quebec City on July 23.
